Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports Pole Contenders for the Indy 500 Again This Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS – Last year, Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports saw James Hinchcliffe win the pole in dramatic fashion for the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500. It was a phenomenal story, but, if you dig deeper into it, it was an overall great qualifying weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year overall for the entire SPM organization. Hinchcliffe’s teammates at Indy in 2016 of Mikhail Aleshin and Oriol Servia also joined him in the top 10 of last year’s starting lineup. Now, the last two days have shown that SPM will once again…

Sebastien Bourdais Fastest in Fast Friday at IMS

INDIANAPOLIS – Fast Friday earned up to it’s billing today, as the quickest laps of the month at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway were turned this afternoon. 22 drivers eclipsed the 230 mph barrier on the 2.5-mile track on Friday with Sebastien Bourdais leading the charge with a fastest lap of 233.116 mph in his No. 18 Honda. On Thursday, Bourdais blew his engine on his Dale Coyne Racing entry but 24 hours later, the new Honda engine they installed overnight led the way on the overall speed chart. Three Andretti Autosport…

Penske Sustains Success by Having the Best Drivers, No “Pay For a Ride” Talent

INDIANAPOLIS – Unfortunately, this era of motorsports rewards drivers with deeper pockets than those without. It doesn’t matter how talented you are, if you don’t have a check that can clear the bank account of most owners in any series around the world, you likely won’t be racing. Too many talented drivers see seasons come and go while they’re on the sidelines because they don’t have the funding necessary to compete. Most teams, even those within the Verizon IndyCar Series, see drivers race for them that are bringing the money to…

Can Penske Win 18th Indy 500 Pole This Weekend? Will Power Only Shot Left

INDIANAPOLIS – Honda appears to have the aerokit to beat for the pole for this year’s 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 (11 a.m. ET/ABC/INDYCAR Radio Network). They dominated the front of the starting lineup a year ago, and a week of practice this year, Honda drivers have been stellar. Before Fast Friday, Chevy had just three drivers in the top 12 of the speed charts. Penske themselves were 5-13-16-17-25. Then, on Fast Friday itself, Penske was 5-13-16-23-24. On the pivotal no tow list, they were 7-13-20-21-22.

Honda Looks Like the Manufacturer to Beat for This Year’s Indy 500 Pole

INDIANAPOLIS – We all knew that Honda had the preferred aerokit to win on the superspeedways this year. Last season, they led all but 110 of their overall laps on the three superspeedway tracks (Indianapolis, Pocono, Texas). Combine that with an aerokit freeze, and there wasn’t a whole lot Chevrolet could do to close the gap. With that being said, they’re showing that they’re going to be the ones to beat for the pole for the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 (11 a.m. ET/ABC/INDYCAR Radio Network). Entering today’s practice session,…

Then, when the boost was turned up for qualifying trim today, they flexed their muscles even more. Andretti, had three cars in the top four on the speed charts on Friday afternoon from the 2.5-mile track, with Ryan Hunter-Reay being second fastest at…

INDIANAPOLIS – Just 16 days ago, Fernando Alonso had never driven a lap in his entire life on an oval. Now, just over two weeks later, he’s going to be qualifying for his first ever Indianapolis 500. But, can he realistically win the pole? I honestly think so.
