So far, the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season has gone much better for the Roush/Fenway Racing camp compared to the last few years. No, the duo isn’t knocking down the door of victory lane yet, but they’re getting closer. In fact, this could be the weekend that one of them actually does drive to victory lane in a Cup race.
Ford drivers have led a series-high 951 laps this year and are clearly the class of the field right now. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has never led a lap at the Bristol Motor Speedway, but I think that changes this weekend because of that previous stat. I also think he’s a contender to win the race as well because of the following stats too.
Stenhouse Jr. hasn’t had the type of success he would have liked to start his Cup career, as he’s winless so far. But, one track has stood out as his best – Bristol. In eight career starts on the high banked Tennessee track, Stenhouse, has four top six finishes there. In fact, he’s finished runner-up twice, including just last year in the Summer race.
Now, add that to the fact that his No. 17 Ford has been much better this year, and you have the recipe that could get Stenhouse into victory lane for the first time on Sunday.
Stenhouse Jr. has had some good runs this year, he’s finished 13th at Atlanta, fourth at Phoenix, 10th at Martinsville and 14th at Texas. What stands out to me is that those two top 10 finishes and the types of tracks they were on. Phoenix, races like a short track and he finished fourth. Martinsville, is a short track and he came home 10th.
Bristol, is also a short track to where he’s had his most success on, what do you think happens there?
That’s why my eye is on Stenhouse Jr. this weekend as a potential new race winner.
