Rain washed out the morning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice session at the Bristol Motor Speedway, but with rain coming back later on today, NASCAR decided to cancel qualifying this evening and replace it with a practice session instead. Luckily, with rain threatening the area, they were still able to get the full 55-minute session in.
Rookie Erik Jones topped the speed charts with a speed of 127.843 mph in his No. 77 Toyota. Jones, has typically been good at Bristol over his brief NASCAR career, so him being on top on Friday afternoon isn’t a shock despite his rookie status.
Kyle Busch who’s looking for his first win of the 2017 season was second fastest with a speed of 127.090 mph in his No. 18 Toyota. The two Toyota drivers weren’t alone up top either.
Their teammates were up front too.
Martin Truex Jr. was fourth quickest with a speed of 126.964 mph while two more JGR drivers in Matt Kenseth (126.704 mph) and Denny Hamlin (126.653 mph) were fifth and sixth respectively to give us five Toyota’s (3 JGR, both FRR) in the top six.
The lone driver in the top six not of the Toyota make was Ryan Blaney who turned the third quickest lap in his No. 21 Ford with a speed of 126.989 mph.
The Ganassi duo of Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray were seventh and eighth respectively as they were the fastest Chevrolet drivers on Friday. Larson, by virtue of the cancellation of qualifying will start on the pole for Sunday’s Food City 500 (2 p.m. ET/FOX/PRN).
Two Fords in Joey Logano and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top 10.
Logano got into the wall in the closing minutes to bring out a red flag in the session. Chase Elliott also got into the wall earlier in the session as well.
