Avondale, AZ – It’s only a matter of when, not if, that a Chip Ganassi Racing car ends up in victory lane during a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race in 2017. So far this season, CGR is honestly the top performing Chevrolet team among the Chevy entries in the garage. Both of their drivers have been stellar so far this season with Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray nabbing top 10 finishes for the team in each of the last two races.
Now, they enter Sunday’s Camping World 500 (3:30 p.m. ET/FOX/MRN) at the Phoenix International Raceway with not just a ton of momentum, but likely among the top few drivers to beat too.
On Friday, both Ganassi drivers were extremely strong. Larson, was second fastest in the lone practice session of the day while McMurray was 10th in his No. 1 Chevrolet.
They also were 1-2 on the 10-lap average speed chart as well.
In qualifying, they backed that speed up with both of them starting among the top five. Larson, will roll his No. 42 Chevrolet off fourth while McMurray will start one spot behind him in fifth.
In the two practices on Saturday, both were once again quick. Larson was third and eighth respectively in the two sessions while McMurray was 11th and 10th respectively himself.
Now, we have to start taking them even more seriously and as a huge contender to challenge the Team Penske and Wood Brothers Fords on Sunday because of this speed here again this weekend.
Larson, has finished runner-up in each of the last two races while McMurray has finishes of 10th and eighth respectively.
On Sunday, I’m expecting a third straight duel top 10’s for the Ganassi camp.
