We’re down to one race left in the opening round of the inaugural NASCAR X-Finity Series Chase, and with that being said, two of the top drivers picked to win this year’s championship are currently on the outside looking in for the eight drivers that will advance to Round 2.
Ty Dillon has had a frustrating season and despite being in the top five of the points at the end of the regular season, he sits ninth in the Chase grid as he’s three points out of the final spot. Dillon, came home third on Sunday in Dover, but that 27th place finish at Kentucky in the opening race of Round 1 is the reason to why he’s in the position that he’s in.
But, he can thank Erik Jones for that. Jones, got loose under Dillon in Turn 3 late in the closing stages of that race in Kentucky two weeks and took them both out. Jones would finish 26th that night as he’s four points out of the final transfer spot.
That puts them in a big pickle heading to Charlotte this weekend as both can make the next round of the Chase without having to win on Friday night, but both also need to finish with top fives. Brennan Poole and Blake Koch are the last two spots right now, but Poole has had four top 10 finishes in his last six races.
Koch, has had four straight top 15’s, so that means Jones and Dillon have no room for failure. That means perfect pit stops, great fuel strategy and most of all, avoid trouble.
That’s a lot to ask for two young drivers, but they have the talent to overcome that. If not, the Chase would already shake things up with the top seed in Jones and Dillon already eliminated.
