Kevin Harvick is among the popular picks to advance to the final round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup at Homestead in three weeks, but if he’s going to get there, he needs to get the Round of 8 started off on the right foot. Harvick, has made it difficult on himself during this Chase format, as yes, he’s never been eliminated from a round, but he’s also put his back against the wall often needing to win in the final race of several rounds.
The reason he’s always facing pressure at Phoenix in this round, is all due to his struggles at Martinsville. Every year during this format, Martinsville has always kick off the round of eight. In those races, Harvick has finished 33rd and eighth in his two tries.
Granted, he’s advanced to the final round in each of those years, it’s still not the results he’s wanted to start off with.
But, for some reason, Martinsville is a track that he’s typically struggled with. He hasn’t had a top five there since 2011 and only has had three total top five finishes in 30 career starts on the Virginia short track.
So, this weekend is all about damage control for him as he’d be happy to bring his No. 4 Chevrolet home with a top 10 effort on Sunday afternoon. With how this Chase has given him feast or famine results, that has to have him nervous for this weekend.
Harvick has either won or finished outside the top 20 so far in five of the six races during the Chase. His finishes are 20th, first, 37th, 38th, first and seventh respectively.
Will he get the finish he needs this weekend and get the round started off on the right foot?
