SONOMA, Calif – It’s no secret, 2016 has been a tough Verizon IndyCar Series season for Marco Andretti. The third generation driver has just two top 10 finishes this season as he’s consistently been the fourth driver in the four car Andretti Autosport team. That’s taken a toll on him. If you go back to the final two race of 2015, Andretti has just two top 10’s in 17 races.
But on Friday, he’s showing he may have turned the corner. Andretti, showed quick pace out of the gates as he turned a lap of 1:17.4611-seconds in his No. 27 Honda in the opening of two practice sessions on Friday morning. Andretti, turned that lap on Lap 3 of his first run as he turned 15 laps overall in the initial session.
Then in the second session later on in the afternoon, Andretti was 11th quickest on the speed charts with a lap of 1:17.328-seconds . He turned 14 more laps in that run to give him 29 laps overall on Friday on the northern California road course.
This shouldn’t come too much of a surprise though as Andretti was extremely quick in the test here eight days ago. He’s showing he has a very fast race car this weekend and a win on Sunday would make Sonoma one of his most memorable tracks.
Marco, won his first ever IndyCar race at Sonoma in 2006. To win again this weekend after the struggles he’s had this year would be huge for him.
