SONOMA, Calif – The second practice session at the Sonoma Raceway on Friday afternoon showed us that Team Penske was going to be a major player for not just qualifying on Saturday, but for the Go Pro Grand Prix of Sonoma race on Sunday as well.
Penske went 1-2-3 in that session and had three cars in the top six in this morning’s session as well. They backed all that speed up in qualifying this afternoon.
Penske had all four of their cars advance to the Firestone Fast Six as they will all start in the top two rows. That’s right, Penske drivers will start 1-2-3-4 on Sunday.
Simon Pagenaud won the pole on the final lap as he will share the front row with Helio Castroneves. Juan Pablo Montoya will roll off third while Will Power will share Row 2 with him in starting fourth.
With nine of the 11 race winners at Sonoma coming from the first three starting positions, this gives Penske very high hopes for tomorrow’s race.
They will definitely have a champion tomorrow as either Power or Pagenaud will win the title, but they can get third in the final standings too as Castroneves currently sits there now and will start up front while his main challengers Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden will start seventh and 10th respectively.
