WATKINS GLEN, NY – I wrote after the test session at Wakins Glen a few weeks ago that the return trip on Labor Day weekend would be a Penske vs. Ganassi show. Well, after three practice sessions and qualifying for Sunday’s Verizon IndyCar Series race at the 11-turn upstate New York facility this weekend, it’s proving to be just that.
Scott Dixon is obviously the one to beat tomorrow as he was quickest in all three practices to go along with winning the pole for Sunday’s race. Will Power is right there with him though as he was third in both sessions on Friday and second this morning. He backed that up with qualifying his No. 12 Chevrolet second in qualifying.
Those are the top two to beat right now.
But, they’ll have to fend off their teammates too. Helio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, Max Chilton, Simon Pagenaud and Juan Pablo Montoya will all start up front with them as they will roll off fourth through eighth respectively.
Yes, you read that right. There’s seven Penske and/or Ganassi cars in the top eight starting spots for Sunday’s race. With track position being so key at the 3.4-mile track, it’s going to be tough to get around these cars.
With that being said, Sunday’s race is theirs to lose as it’s going to take strategy and bad luck for someone outside of the Penske or Ganassi camp to win this weekend. They’re just too strong and too fast.
Pick a winner among these guys for tomorrow’s race.
