INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time since 1988, the USAC Silver Crown Series took to the high banked Salem oval this past weekend, as Kody Swanson parked his No. 63 entry in victory lane on Saturday night. It was fitting too, as it was the first USAC race since Bryan Clauson was tragically killed in Belleville the weekend prior as Clauson was known for driving the No. 63 USAC Midget.
Well, it was the No. 63 Silver Crown car powered by Swanson who ended up in victory lane, as the California native won his 15th career Silver Crown race tying him with J.J. Yeley for fourth all-time.
Swanson, started on the pole and led the opening 10 Laps before second place starter Aaron Pierce got by him for the top spot. Pierce, was in command for much of the duration as he was close to winning his first Silver Crown race since Darlington in 2007. Unfortunately, the Muncie native spun in Turn 3 with 15 laps-to-go and he lost the lead.
He wouldn’t hit anything but the spin would cost him the victory as despite leading a race high 50 of the 75 laps, Pierce would finish sixth.
Swanson, would reinherit the lead due to the spin and on the restart with 12 laps-to-go, he would pull away and never look back. Chris Windom would finish right behind in second place for his seventh top five in as many starts in 2016.
Swanson extends his points lead over Windom by 13 heading to Springfield next weekend.
Jerry Coons Jr. came home third while Bobby Santos and Justin Grant rounded out the top five.
