Michael McDowell fought the lead away from pole sitter Alex Tagliani near the midway point of Saturday’s NASCAR X-Finity Series race at the Road America road course in Wisconsin, and never looked back en route to his first career NASCAR victory in 94 career X-Finity Series stars.

McDowell had to endure two late race restars inside of seven laps-to-go, including in overtime, but it didn’t faze him, as he led 24 of the 48 laps in his No. 2 Chevrolet in today’s Road America 180 powered by Johnsonville.

The Richard Childress Racing driver had to fight off his teammate Brendan Gaughan on the last lap around the Elkhart Lake facility, but he didn’t flinch.

Gaughan, who won at Road America in 2014, came home in second. Brennan Poole, Daniel Suarez and Ryan Reed rounded out the top-five finishers.

Series points leader Elliott Sadler finished the race eighth.

Just two races remain before the XFINITY Series Chase field is set. The XFINITY Series returns at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sept. 3 for the VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway (NBC, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
