FORT WORTH, TX – This season has been dreadful for Ed Carpenter. Yes, his other car that he owns, driven by Josef Newgarden, has been stellar, but bad luck has struck Carpenter in every race. Entering tonight’s resumption of the Firestone 600k, Carpenter had finishes of 21st, 31st, 18th and 21st respectively.
Tonight, in his final start of the year, Carpenter restarted up front and stayed there until the closing stages of the 228 lap race. Carpenter, was one of only five cars on the lead lap with just 28 to go, but he crashed out four laps later when a right rear tire went down on his No. 20 Chevrolet.
On the Lap 220 restart, Carpenter was side-by-side for the lead, but on Lap 224, he crashed into the outside SAFER barrier in nearly the exact same spot that Josef Newgarden was injured at back in June.
From having a guaranteed top five, Carpenter will finish 18th as it tied his best finish of the year.
That just tells you how bad of a year he’s had this season. It also ends his year as he only races on ovals. The final two races will be on road courses meaning his 2016 season is now completed.
The only good news for him now is that it can only go up in 2017.
