INDIANAPOLIS – Unfortunately, another major sponsor within the Verizon IndyCar Series will leave, as Target announced on Wednesday that 2016 will be their final season with Chip Ganassi Racing on the IndyCar side of things. Target, has been with the organization for the last 27 years, but today, they revealed that this will be the final one, as they’re focusing on the NASCAR side of things and elsewhere moving forward.
Target confirmed that they’re looking for new fresh ideas and IndyCar unfortunately isn’t among them.
Target, already pulled back their support with Ganassi last year when they scaled down to just one full-time entry in IndyCar instead of two. Now, they will leave all together.
As far as the NASCAR deal, they have a contract through 2017, but further deals remain unseen.
This is a huge loss for IndyCar and Ganassi, but Chip Ganassi Racing has since said that they will still plan to have four full-time cars on the grid next season and that this doesn’t affect Scott Dixon’s job security one bit.
Dixon, has won all four championships with the Target banner and is in the hunt for a fifth with five races remaining.
