INDIANAPOLIS – Jack Hawksworth has had his fair share of bad luck this season. In 10 races this year, his best finish is 11th as that occurred in the season opener at St. Pete and again in Road America. In fact, he has just one top 10 in his last 14 Verizon IndyCar Series starts.
But, I think he nabs his first top 10 of the season this weekend in the Honda Indy Toronto.
For some reason, street course races just suit the A.J. Foyt Racing driver, as in 14 career IndyCar starts on them, he has six top 10’s. In fact, six of his combined 10 total top 10’s in the last three seasons have come on street circuits.
Also, in three career Toronto starts, Hawksworth has finishes of 13th, sixth and 14th respectively. I think another top 10 is heading his way this weekend.
“I love Toronto,” Hawksworth said ahead of this weekend’s race. “It’s steeped with history. It’s a super tricky circuit, but it’s also a great city.”
Hawksworth, was quick to point out that his past history there in the feeder series’ is why he’s most looking forward to the race this weekend.
“I had some poles and won quite a few races here in Star Mazda and in Indy Lights before finishing in the top six in my IndyCar debut there, so it’s always been pretty kind to me. Hopefully this year will the scene of another good memory for me in Canada.”
In three career starts at the Exhibition Place circuit in Star Mazda and Indy Lights competition, Hawksworth won all three races. Furthermore, in nine career street course starts in the two Mazda Road to Indy Series’ Hawksworth won seven of them with coming home runner-up in the other two.
So, street circuits clearly suit his driving style, and I can see him having his No. 41 ABC Supply Co. Honda battling for a top 10 on Sunday.
