ELKHART LAKE, WI – In the two Verizon IndyCar Series practice sessions on Friday, there may not have been one driver that stood out to me as the favorite to take the pole for Sunday’s Kohler Grand Prix in qualifying tomorrow, nor a huge favorite to win this weekend’s 50 Lap race. But, one team stood out as the favorites – Andretti Autosport.
This organization has really turned things around since the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis.
Prior to that race, they led a combined three laps and had just two total top 10’s on the entire season.
89 laps led, one victory, the Indy 500 win at that, and eight top 10’s in four races.
They dominated the Indianapolis 500 in having three cars start in the top five and also sweeping the top two finishing positions. They led nearly half the race that day.
At Belle Isle, they were strong once again as they didn’t get any of the two wins, but they had solid efforts. After that, in the rain delayed Texas race, they were strong for a fourth straight event, as Carlos Munoz earned the pole and Ryan Hunter-Reay will restart that race in August second.
Today, they kept the momentum going, as they had three cars in the top seven on the speed charts in the opening session as Munoz was second, Marco Andretti sixth and rookie Alexander Rossi seventh.
Then in the second session, they were fifth (Munoz), ninth (Hunter-Reay), 10th (Rossi) and 12th (Andretti).
So, this tells me they’re going to be the ones up front battling for the win on Sunday afternoon. Why wouldn’t they be? They’ve been up front since Indy as that’s not changing anytime soon.
This group found something and they’re being rewarded for it.
