Nico Rosberg Leads Entire Russian Grand Prix En Route to 7th Straight Win

Another Formula One race, another Nico Rosberg victory. The German led flag to flag in Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix en route to his seventh straight Formula 1 victory (including 4-for-4 in 2016). It was also his ninth top two finish in his last 10 starts, as this year’s championship is his to lose as he now holds a 43-point lead in the standings.

Rosberg’s win was aided once again by his main challengers’ struggles as Sebastian Vettel was involved in a first lap accident in Turn 2.

Vettel, was hit from behind from Danill Kvyat in the second corner and pushed into Kvyat’s Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo. That caused damage to Vettel’s Ferrari as he had to slow in Turn 3. Unfortunately, he was hit again from Kvyat and made hard contact with the wall.

His day was done as it was his second DNF in four races this season.

The other main challenger for Rosberg was his Mercedes teammate of Lewis Hamilton, but the two-time defending world champion had issues in Q3 yesterday and had to start today’s race 10th.

Hamilton, charged hard as he cut over five seconds off Rosberg’s deficit in 13 laps, but water pressure issues forced his to back off as he had to cruise to his third podium in four races this season and fifth runner-up finish in his last seven starts.

That allowed Rosberg to easily cruise to his fourth victory in as many tries this season as he beat Hamilton by 25.022-seconds.

Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the podium for his second podium in four races this season and third straight top five and fifth in his last six races dating back to last season.

The two Williams cars in Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa rounded out the top five in finishes of fourth and fifth respectively.

Fernando Alonso earned his best finish in 13 races with a sixth place effort as it was just his third top 10 effort since the start of last season.
