INDIANAPOLIS – It was another Honda dominated day on Thursday, as this time, Gabby Chaves led the way on the speed charts in Day 4 of practice for the 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
Chaves, turned a lap of 227.961 on his 16th lap today, as that time stood as the quickest lap around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit on Thursday afternoon.
The Dale Coyne Racing driver was fifth quickest on Wednesday, as we now have to start taking notice that last year’s Sunoco Rookie of the Year is actually going to be a contender.
Townsend Bell was second fastest with a speed of 227.593 mph in his No. 29 California Pizza Kitchen Honda while his Andretti Autosport teammate of Carlos Munoz was right behind him on the speed charts with a speed of 227.589 mph in his No. 26 UFD Honda.
Chaves’ Dale Coyne Racing teammate of Conor Daly was fourth fastest (227.524 mph) while Charlie Kimball rounded out the top five today as he was the quickest Chevrolet driver with a speed of 227.477 mph.
We only had one incident today as that came when the engine started smoking on Ryan Hunter-Reay’s No. 28 DHL Honda just past 4 p.m. ET today.
Other than that, it was a good clean yet busy day as there were 2,563 total laps run on Thursday afternoon as it was the last day of the week where we’d see race day packages as the boost levels will be turned up starting tomorrow morning on Fast Friday.
Gates open tomorrow at 10 am with practice running from 12-6 p.m. ET. Admission is $15.
