Lewis Hamilton is watching Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg pull further and further away in the championship already. Rosberg won his second straight race to start the 2016 Formula One season off, but Rosberg has actually won five consecutive races as a whole as he also won the last three races of the 2015 season.
But, Hamilton has to feel lucky he was even able to watch Rosberg dominate today’s Bahrain Grand Prix though as contact with Valtteri Bottas in Turn 1 on Lap 1 nearly cost Hamilton points on Sunday.
Bottas was penalized for the contact but the damage was already done as Hamilton fell to ninth from starting on the pole for today’s race.
He’d have to pit but his car was too heavily damaged to make any noise up front, but he still drove to an impressive third place effort despite the contact and damage.
It was Hamilton’s eighth straight podium and 10th in his last 11 races, but the England native is going to need to start winning soon or Rosberg may be too far ahead before he can make a comeback.
Hamilton won nine times in 2015 as he needs to do that again this year or it may not be enough.
Luckily, China is up next as Hamilton is the defending race winner there and in fact has won at China two years in-a-row and three in the last five seasons.
In fact, Hamilton has a podium finish at China in every year since 2010, so it’s a safe bet they’re going to come out swinging in two weeks.
